What A Way To Make A Livin’

Tumble outta bed
And stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
Yawnin’ and stretchin’ and try to come to life

Wow! It is March already? We never turn down a party and we’re getting pumped up for Women’s History Month! Cyber-FM has been workin’ “9 to 5” to create a masterpiece playlist of the Top Female Artists of the past century and we’re sharing it with you on our Spotlight Channel!

Women have been busting out some sick tunes predating the 15th Century, but weren’t always allowed to put their name on it. Lame right? Although they were permitted to sing and play instruments, it was considered “stepping out of their role” to share their musical originality.

Thankfully, our brilliant ladies swerved around these roadblocks by employing pseudonyms, which allowed them to serenade the ears of our ancestors.

“If I’m going to sing like someone else, then I don‘t need to sing at all.” -Billie Holiday

Nobody wants to be a copycat if they have ambition for originality and it’s been an adventure for the great female musicians of the 20th century: Carrie Northey of the Tin Pan Alley Era took on the name “Caro Roma” to skirt around the system and share her original masterpieces. By the 1930’s, women were writing and co-writing songs such as Disney’s “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” by Ann Ronnell.

To answer the above question, our ladies weren’t afraid, because while
they were making musical history and creating jobs for their post WW2 era sisters, they were earning a pay-check!

Come the 1960’s, women were sweeping through mainstream radio, writing ballads, and fighting for their Rights. Since it was a fairly new idea that women hang up their aprons and embrace their independence, the female influence in the Pop Music industry empowered the newer generations to break the glass ceiling. Pop Icons such as Cher and Barbra Streisand turned heads and dropped the jaws of radio listeners, surpassing even The Beatles in popularity a few times.

Workin’ 9 to 5
What a way to make a livin’
Barely gettin’ by
It’s all takin’ and no givin’
They just use your mind
And you never get the credit
It’s enough to drive you crazy
If you let it!

We’ve all had that one job, with that one boss, that made you want to flip trash cans and shred everything at the office. Well, in the 1980’s women had enough of being underpaid and under-appreciated. They took to their microphones to call them out! Pop Culture exploded and female singers like Madonna and Janet Jackson were topping the musical charts. This paved the way for all female music artists of the 21st Century and the social acceptance of today’s open media expression.

It’s going to be a party on this month’s Spotlight Channel and we’re hoping everyone tunes in at https://app.cyberfmradio.com to help us celebrate the great women of our musical history.
